METHODS FOR REMOVING GUM FROM CONCRETE

The best methods of removing gum from concrete depends on the gum’s age and the level of penetration into the concrete surface. If the chewing gum was left not long ago and it has not penetrated the surface yet, we are sometimes able to remove it by covering it with ice until the gum freezes, then scraping the gum off with a metal putty knife.

The ice forces the gum to freeze into a workable substance compared to a gooey and stringy mess. Once the gum is frozen, we slide a metal putty knife or scraper under the gum residue. After that we slide the scraper very slowly under the gum and the whole piece should peel right off the concrete.

The above process is only possible with brand new gum.

When we remove chewing gum that is already black, or is already smashed down into the concrete surface, we use a hot water pressure washer with the heat dialed up to 200 Degrees in order to melt the gum. For this type of gum removal, we will not use high pressure because that might ruin the surface of the concrete!

Our crew never uses any more pressure than necessary to safely clean commercial concrete. These surfaces can be damaged much easier than people think, especially if they’re only a few years old. Concrete can need up to 100 years to cure completely. That is why we always use hot water and the least amount of pressure possible for our chewing gum removal service.
